Mystery Trips 2024
Started by going to Jones and Beach, the F streetcar terminal. I was once again lucky to have boat car 233 operating
in testing mode and waiting in sequence with other cars that would start their runs. Once it departed, I walked the 3 blocks
to Hyde and Beach.
This was the next Thursday of the three days of the Hyde Ride cable car line (Hyde and Beach terminal via Hyde, Washington, Powell, and
Hyde back to the terminal). On Thursdays, Tony Bennett dedicated California car 53 is used, and it was in the line on Hyde
when I arrived there. Because 53, big 19, and 42 are oversized for the turntables, they must use a crossover track
installed at the Aquatic Park terminal. There are no crossovers down at Powell and Market, so the double enders must
turn back from Washington to Jackson and then go back to the Wharf. As preceding cable cars pulled out for their runs
to Market, 53 worked its way into the crossover and the inbound loading track, allowing another car to start its run when
it coasted back on that track to pick up passengers.
Powell car 23 had trouble; a truck hooked it on for towing back to the carbarn.
Took a trolley coach over to Taylor Street, where Powell car 26 ("Maybelle") was decorated in patriotic colors
to observe Memorial Day and Independence Day. It was assigned to Powell Mason.
Nikon D5600 camera yielded 221 photos.
